Shortly before Christmas, members of the Veteran Committee of Portland Lodge 188 delivered gifts donated by our Lodge members, for five children from three different families. Although it was short notice, each child received clothing, coats, and at least one fun item. The gifts were delivered to our contact, who then distributed them to the families on Sunday, December 14.

Gifts were also delivered to the Scarborough Veterans Home. We had four specific names, along with a special request for various sizes of men’s pajamas and men’s sweatpants. In total, we were able to provide close to 80 much-needed items. And the four Veterans received their special requested items.
During this season of giving, our Lodge members, once again, came through to help those less fortunate in our community, and remembered our Veterans. Thank you!

Upon delivery, we were greeted by two Veterans, Pop (in orange) and Dan, who helped get the gifts to the Activities Director. JoAnn Sparks and April Libby from Lodge 188 delivered the gifts.

from North School (l-r): Edil, Jean, Janine, Heather.

Then, on December 26, using a $2,000 donation from the lodge member volunteers assembled 100 bags containing beef stew, spam, potatoes, pasta, tomato sauce and a $10 gift card to either Hannaford or Wal-Mart.

On December 28 and 29 the bags were delivered by members to Spring Crossing Senior Housing in Westbrook (34 units) and North School Apartments (60 units, + 2 children) in Portland.

The gift bags were an overwhelming success. A resident at North School, (also a member of lodge 188) told us that “this was the first time anyone has ever done anything for our building, and folks are going to be so surprised.”  It was a very positive way to end the year!!
