Unable to expend the funds generated by an Elks National Foundation Spotlight Grant, as proposed within the grant application, to assist previously homeless veterans in furnishing a permanent home, due to the shortage of housing in this area, the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954, obtained authority to utilize those funds in order to address the growing food insecurity in this area affecting thousands of military veterans.

To accomplish this the Presque Isle Elks donated the entire $2,000 grant to Catholic Charities of Maine, Hunger and Relief Services. Through their network the program is able to provide several dollars’ worth of food relief for every dollar they have.

Those participating in the presentation of those funds to Dixie Shaw, program director for the Hunger and Relief Services of Catholic Charities of Maine, were military veterans who are members of the Presque Isle Elks, shown from left to right, Laurence Shorette, Terry, Plummer, Shaw, Jim Gehring, Carl Olson and Moe Collins.
