News from Waterville Lodge 905
Exalted Ruler's Message
Dear Members of Waterville Lodge 905,
You should all be proud of your Lodge with the Membership Initiations. As of June 11th we have Initiated 27 new
members. This is a great start for the 2010-2011 year. We are bringing in members that are anxious to become active. Keep up the good work!
Vince Vaughan, a new member, has contacted Paul Jacques, a seasoned member, also of IF&W fame in regards to getting his certification for being a Hunter Safety Instructor. As you know we have not had a Hunter Safety Course at the Lodge in a few years. With members like Vince, Paul and others we should have a class this fall, just in time for Moose Season. Mooooooah!
You may have heard about our Wreath Laying Ceremony at the St. Francis Cemetery on 5/23. This was the first time I had the privilege of being involved with this very moving event honoring all those men and women that served our country and community. Th e service included laying flowered wreaths on stone monuments by the Elks, VFW, American Legion, Police and Fire Departments. I was honored to be accompanied by our Ladies Auxiliary President, Fran Brown in the actual placing of the wreath. Next year we will publicize this event a little better. I feel our members should have the opportunity to take part.
We also put out the Elk flags on our departed members graves on 5/24, in Waterville, Vassalboro, Fairfield, Oakland, and the Veterans Cemetery in Augusta. If there are families of departed members who would like to place a marker on their graves, please let us know. We are having a hard time finding a source for the holders but I may be able to find a source at the convention.
This brings me to Flag Day 2010 which we celebrated on 6/13/2010. I hoped for a few more members to be in attendance but we had a good crowd. You will have to kick yourself if you didnt make it. Jim York, PER, did an excellent job of organizing and coordinating. He brought in the “Kennebec Valley Chordsmen”, the Dirigo Young Marines led by Commander Floyd Smith and Boy Scout Troop Leader Don Welch to play key rolls in the ceremony. Along with our Officers, Chaplin and Esquire I think we put on quite a show.
This year was the first time I was part of a “Flag Retirement Ceremony” which we did at the end of the service. It really makes you proud to be an American and an Elk seeing the way we treat our “Flag” with such dignity and respect. I have to tell you I still get goose bumps when I hear “Th e Star Spangled Banner” or “God Bless America” being sung when our flag is flying in the wind. And if you havent been to the Lodge in awhile you havent seen our road lined with flags for the last 30 days. Th at sight really makes my heart “swell and throb” every time I go to our Lodge.
You can burn your grass skirts now because the 2010 luau is all over. Great food, fun and games were had by all. Wonderful job, Entertainment Committee: Rose Marquis, Sue McMullin, Pat McGaw, Corine Pace and everyone of their helpers that day did a fantastic job!
Its not too early to inform you that “Buck Night” is coming on Sept. 25th, so start putting those quarters in your piggy-banks. Randy Gerry is having a meeting on July 21st at 6:30 to start the ball rolling, anyone interested in joining the committee, please show up then or call Randy at 242-2026. Also, we are having a separate 25-gun raffle this year, run by Steve Thompson and Tom Hachey and as you know, these guys love good guns, so buy those Limited Tickets as soon as you can so you dont miss out. I have some already. You can catch me at the Lodge in the PM.
“Fore!” Th e Golf Tournament will be on 9/11/2010 this year at the Lakeview course in Unity with a Chicken BBQ and awards at our Lodge afterwards. Call Rick Whalen at 649-7734 for more info.
Please contact Al Stedman at 873-4335 to help with the Elks Float in the Winslow Parade on the Fourth of July or just stop in and see him. He is almost always at the Lodge.
Commit, Support and Participate!
Sincerely and Fraternally Yours,
David K. Anderson, Exalted Ruler
