State President Letter November 2017

Dear Maine Elks Association Members:
Here we are in Central Maine enjoying the almost summer like weather and recalling all the wonderful experiences we have had to date.

When we returned from the first annual cruise with the Waterville Elks it was hard to get back to business as usual.

The Sanford Lodge had invited us to visit them on one of their biggest fund raising events of the year; The “Chili Chowder Cook Off” and the Sanford Elks MCCP Golf Tournament; and their live auction which was a huge success all the way around. My team was Rob the ER, Denise Vear the Loyal Knight and Sandi and I. We had a wonderful time. We didn’t win the team prize but Sandi won “Closest to the Pin” on one hole and was one of the players in the putt-off contest to qualify for the Putt-off. Thank you Sanford Lodge.

Our next stop was to the Lewiston Lodge for DD Kathleen’s clinic. She is doing a good job as DD and as usual anyone who chose to participate learned something to improve ourselves and Lodges as elks.

We had our 65-25 party at Waterville and thank you to all those that participated with us.

Our next State President visit was to York Lodge with dinner and a night out at Mike’s Clam Shack dancing and listing to some really fine music for our age group, The “On Tap Band”. We had an ocean side beautiful room to relax in that was wonderful.

On 9/17/17 we were retrained on “Drug Awareness” by 2nd Vice President, Anthony Gause at the Augusta Lodge. You should all try to attend one of these training sessions because every year National Drug Awareness folks produce new material. This year they have produced films showing the impact on teenagers and families. You must see this if you have teens. If a person is not involved in drugs by the time they turn 25 it is likely they won’t ever.

The next weekend we had free but decided to attend a fund raiser for MCCP in Biddeford /Saco Lodge called “Hugs from Haley” It demonstrated the influence, dedicated Lodge members and family can have on the community; Thank you!

We attended and helped on the Central District Soccer Shoot and Holy-Cow can those kids kick a soccer ball.

On the first weekend in October we had our Presidential visit to Brunswick Lodge where once again we were treated as royalty. We also had fun playing “Chicken Shoot” which raised funds for their Lodge. Good job and thank you! We missed Rod, I hope he got his moose!!

Brunswick Lodge also hosted the fall MEA State Meeting on 10/8/17. Good job setting that up and thank you again.

October 14th found us at the Lewiston Lodge for their Talent Show. Once again the show was sold out; you should have bought your tickets early. We were treated to the best Italian cooking at Davinci’s Eatery in Lewiston, ME. Try it you will love it!

The following weekend found us back at the Augusta Lodge assisting in the State Soccer Shoot which ended with us helping to hand out the awards to the winners and sending them on to NH for the Regional Shoot. Thank you President Elect Sue Piper and Don for filling in for us as we could not be there due to the GER visit.

November brought the moment we had been waiting for, the GER Malcolm McPherson’s and First Lady Pat’s visit to Maine. What an experience to have as avid elks; escorting and visiting with the leader of all Elks for 2017-2018. An exciting time for the Waterville Lodge was having a dinner reception for Malcolm and Pat at our Lodge. That was preceded by ER “Shu” and the Augusta Lodge hosting a luncheon earlier that day. Thank you to Augusta and Waterville. We had several tour stops around Maine; The new VA Cemetery in Augusta; Maine Museum, The MCCP Center in Scarborough; The Maine State Police Crime Lab, and Maine Technologies in Chelsea, ME.

Thank you MEA, Mike Zellen our sponsor and wife Donna, GER Malcolm and Pat, Jim Ferland, Past Grand Lodge Esteemed Leading Knight, SDGER Andy Constantine, Roger Sicard, Past Grand Lodge Administrative Assistant Coastal District and his friend Dot, Bob Drisco, Grand Lodge Tiler and Past Grand Lodge Fraternal Committee Area1 and wife Myra and Barbara McCallum our Past Sponsor’s wife. It was a wonderful experience!!

Our last visit for November was to the Gardiner Lodge on Veteran’s Day; (After the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in Waterville) Which was included with dinner and a verywell done Country and Western Show. As the final song was sung you could feel the patriotism swelling in your chest. Thank you Gardiner Lodge and ER Darelyn!
